"The year 2016 will mark the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare (1564-1616), “Man of the Millennium (Time magazine, 2000).    The most translated and performed playwright in the world, Shakespeare continues to live in theatre, literature, music, opera, ballet, art, and popular culture around the world. Translated, appropriated, lauded, confronted, attacked, and sometimes pointedly ignored, Shakespeare is more than an author.  His works carry various (often contradictory) meanings in different cultures.   As a form of cultural Esperanto – a common “language” shared among many nationalities –, Shakespeare has also become an instantly recognizable “brand.”

Shakespeare 400 will be a wide variety of activities and events at the University of Ottawa, Canada in 2016 subsumed under the general theme of “Shakespeare’s afterlife”  — that is, the way in which Shakespeare has influenced, inspired, offended or otherwise affected a wide spectrum of disciplinary fields —  and culminating in special events on 23 April, traditionally accepted as both Shakespeare’s birth and death date."

The festival takes place in Shanghai, China, from September 11-17, 2016. Co-hosts in Shanghai include the International Theatre Institute (ITI), the Shanghai Theatre Academy and the Chinese Dramatists Society.

The week-long festival is designed to commemorate Shakespeare and to celebrate cultural exchange. It will feature local and international troupes (applications are open to professional companies as well as amateur theatre groups). The participants are also invited to attend a forum on 'Experiencing Shanghai and China', which will focus on Shakespeare and contemporary China as well as Shakespeare and cultural change.

"Asia has affected the study and performance of Shakespeare, in Asia and around the world. This calls for a collective effort--increasing exchanges and collaborations among Asian Shakespeareans, and between Asia and the rest of the world. But given the vastness and diversity of Asia, the richness of its scholarship and theatres, we can, should, and must do more. Responding to the call by Bi-qi Beatrice Lei to establish a formal association, scholars, artists, and students across the globe signed up to help found the Asian Shakespeare Association, a non-profit, non-government organization dedicated to researching, producing, teaching, translating, and promoting Shakespeare from an Asian perspective.

Ratified by the generally elected Executive Committee, our Constitution details the ASA’s mission, governance, and membership. The ASA currently has over 400 members, representing Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Guam, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Macau, Malaysia, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, the Philippines, Poland, Qatar, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The ASA holds biannual conferences in Asian locations. The second ASA conference (‘All the World is his Stage: Shakespeare Today’) will go to Delhi, 1-3 December 2016. Performances at the conference include: I Don’t Like It/ As You Like It (English) Directed by Rajat Kapoor, Hamlet (in Hindi) Directed by K. Madavane, and Dying to Succeed (English), a solo performance by Yuki Ellias."

"The 8th Beijing Fringe Festival, which features 12 Shakespeare dramas and various competitions and exhibitions, is expected to kick off this September.

As introduced by Meng Jinghui - art director of the festival, the 12 plays, among which are Hamlet, King Lear, and As You Like It, were produced to pay tribute to William Shakespeare to mark his 400th year anniversary.

Several young Chinese drama directors will grace the festival with their Shakespeare productions, such as Chinese mainland director Li Ning and Hong Kong director Junda Huang, who will bring Othello and Kiss respectively to the festival. The latter is a novel adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s sonnets.

As reported, this year's festival has a special feature, where innovative drama presentations will be staged. The other two highlights of the festival are an art installation of the stage scenes, and a cartoon exhibition featuring works by young artists Mao Bing and Li Ang.

The 12 plays will be on show at Fengchao Theatre, the small theatre in National Theatre of China, Juying Theatre, 9 Theatre and Tianqiao Theatre.
