“Fiesta in the sunshine. Siesta in the shadows. Black malice. Bright love. Board BOAC flight 1212 for Illyria, Costa del Sol 1980 for the flight of your life!” –description from the Fringe Programme
Company: Livewire
Selected Reviews:
"The Scotsman review (4 stars): "Livewire Theatre’s Twelfth Night, or the Ship of Fools, shone with wit and beauty. In the tiny space on the Royal Mile, we were at close quarters with this energetic cast of 15, from the veteran Yorkshire-based company stacked with classy amateurs. The writing spiced up the Bard with a gang of five fools, borrowed from an allegory by Plato, and a bit of Elvis as well." FringeReview (recommended show): "Illyria has shifted itself to the Costa del Sol, sometime in the early 1980’s, for this tale of sun, sea, sand and a few hairy chests (and that’s just the women!) in this very original adaptation of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. So it is that we board a creaking BOAC plane bound for the south. But we hit some pretty violent turbulence which results in the plane ditching into the sea, throwing its occupants to the mercy of the waves and a handily-placed desert island." "a superbly crafted production delivered with gusto by a very talented cast."

British Theatre Guide review (4 stars): "If there's a misstep in the play, it's that the inclusion of rather a lot of contemporary added dialogue in the front end of the play sits slightly incongruously with the Shakespearean text in the opening scenes. But, as the cast sonorously declaim from atop the familiar double stepladder prop, it hardly matters, as the wonderful adventure already has you."
