The UK Premiere of pianist and composer André Tchaikowsky's opera based on Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice. The opera is a potent attack on prejudice, a deeply personal response to Tchaikowsky's experiences as a child in the Warsaw Ghetto, that was unperformed for three decades before David Pountney commissioned performances at the Bregenz Festival in Austria. The Welsh National Opera production was part of the Welsh National Opera's autumn Shakespeare400 Season. WNO Artistic Director Pountney said “It's a marvellous opportunity for us to bring together enormously varied works which Shakespeare’s works have inspired.”

Since 1991 a recreation of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre has stood on the racecourse in Neuss, Germany. Each year it hosts a summer festival and the 2016 edition showcased productions from companies across Europe including several premieres, a puppet Tempest, and a one-woman Henry VIII. The festival also included a classical Shakespeare concert, a lecture by Patrick Spottiswoode of the London Globe, and a series of events exploring the idea of ‘Shakespeare and beyond’ which included a stage version of Woody Allen’s 1982 film A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy and an adaptation of Friedrich Schiller’s Maria Stuart. The majority of productions were presented in German; German surtitles were available for those presented in English or French.

“The Shakespeare Forumexpands its programming in 2016 to present an unpublished version of Macbeth, signed by award-winning English actor Greg Hicks and one of the leading names in The Royal Shakespeare Company. The cast is made up of nine Brazilian actors. Selected by Hicks himself, these actors went through a process of auditions that received about 650 submissions. Of this total, some were selected by the SP School of Theater and 36 professionals underwent an intense training on Shakespeare, taught by Bernadeth Alves. Greg, who already has a dialogue with Brazil, invited the master of capoeiraCarlo Alexandre Teixeira to be his assistant director looking to create an innovative and unusual version of Macbeth .
