Margaret of Anjou, By Jove Theatre

A takeover of Battersea’s Gallery on the Corner - combining live performance with installation art - to tell the story of Shakespeare’s infamous She-Wolf of France. The text is pieced together from the War of the Roses tetralogy, with some additional new writing.

Shakespeare Syndrome, Mermaids

“We all agree Shakespeare's characters need professional help. They won't find it here. Shakespeare Syndrome, a one-act comedy, shows what happens when several characters go to the same psychiatrist's office. Though this be madness, there's no method in't.” –description from the Fringe Programme

Ricardo III, Teatro Nacional D. Maria II

Ricardo III, Teatro Nacional D. Maria II

Richard loves Richard

In 2015, two years after discovering the bones of Richard III under the tarmac of a car park in the city of Leiceste, we unearthed in the D. Maria II the eponymous piece of William Shakespeare, which relates the most Machiavellian ascent to the throne. In November we offer you the opportunity to (re)discover this work, distinguished with a 'Globo de Ouro' award for best theatre show of 2015 and the SPA award for best actor for Miguel Moreira.

With the artistic direction of Tónan Quito, the show oscillates between contempt and fascination for this cunning being. And so he proceeds from death to death, from lying to lying. Are we all Richard?

The Tragedy of Richard the Third, MaineStage Shakespeare

“The War of the Roses is over, and an exhausted, blood-soaked England is ready for peace at last. But for one man, peace is not enough. Disfigured, embittered, and gleefully amoral, Richard of York invites the audience to join him as he cuts down every obstacle between him and the crown. The original tale of charismatic villainy (and the inspiration for a slew of contemporary baddies on stage and screen), the homicidal, hair-raising Tragedy of Richard III reminds us that evil can be witty, insidious fun.”

Le Off (Festival d'Avignon)

“The Festival d’Avignon celebrated its 70th edition in 2016 and while there were no major Shakespearean productions on the main programme, they dominated the programme of the Festival Off d’Avignon (the fringe festival). The only playwright whose works were performed and adapted more was Molière. From puppet shows to experimental takes on the tragedies, Le Off offered a wide range of Shakespeare for all ages.”

Ricardo III, INBA, Mexico

Ricardo III, INBA, Mexico

Richard III is the story of a nobleman who is determined to seize the crown of England. A man without scruples, a prodigious monster, an extraordinary villain and eternal warrior. Richard is the incarnation of selfishness, ambition, despotism and betrayal, a man who seduces everyone in his path and makes them fall under the spell of his insatiable desire for power. Richard's battle is with himself, but the victims are the public. This adaptation seeks to link Shakespeare's story and the history of Mexico at a very visceral level.

Richard III, Montana Shakespeare in the Parks

Montana Shakespeare in the Parks (MSIP) is the only fully professional touring theatre program in the state currently producing Shakespeare’s plays, the only Shakespeare company in the country to reach as extensively into rural areas and the only company in the state that offers its performances free to the public, guaranteeing accessibility to all. MSIP travels to 60 communities every summer with 75 performances throughout MT, northern Wyoming, eastern Idaho, western North Dakota and eastern Washington with an emphasis on underserved, rural areas. Over 40% of the communities served by MSIP have a population of less than 2,000 and nearly 80% have less than 10,000. Since 1973, the summer touring program has presented over 2,150 performances to nearly three-quarters of a million people. MSIP is a nationally recognized outreach program of the College of Arts and Architecture at Montana State University.

Shakespeare Festival im Globe Neuss

Since 1991 a recreation of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre has stood on the racecourse in Neuss, Germany. Each year it hosts a summer festival and the 2016 edition showcased productions from companies across Europe including several premieres, a puppet Tempest, and a one-woman Henry VIII. The festival also included a classical Shakespeare concert, a lecture by Patrick Spottiswoode of the London Globe, and a series of events exploring the idea of ‘Shakespeare and beyond’ which included a stage version of Woody Allen’s 1982 film A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy and an adaptation of Friedrich Schiller’s Maria Stuart. The majority of productions were presented in German; German surtitles were available for those presented in English or French.

Sandaime Richard

Sandaime Richard is written by Hideki Noda, described by revered Japanese director Yukio Ninagawa as 'the most talented playwright of contemporary Japan'. Noda effortlessly parallels the Wars of the Roses in England with the intrigue in an ikebana clan in Japan. From Noda’s script, Director Ong Keng Sen creates an extravaganza of comic turns with his signature style of juxtaposing Asian traditional performance forms, including the modern tradition of Takarazuka, a popular all-female entertainment revue. Inspired by William Shakespeare’s “Richard III” but very different, Sandaime Richard opens in Singapore this September before heading to Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre for a two-week run and later embarking on a Japanese tour of four cities.

Richard III, Schaubühne Berlin

Thomas Ostermeier’s Richard III, interpreted by Lars Eidinger in an outstanding performance, has a direct relationship to his audience throughout the play and seems to ask them, in the director words, just that: “Have you ever wanted to do what Richard does? Have you never felt the desire to commit wrongful acts?”

Kings of War, Toneelgroep Amsterdam

Kings of War, Toneelgroep Amsterdam

A radical reworking of Shakespeare's Henry V, 1, 2 and 3, Henry VI, and Richard III, combining bold cuts - 1 Henry VI is reduced to two brief sequences totalling just under 200 words - with van Hove's characteristic attention to the nuances of the Shakespearean text. Other prominent features are: the use of live video footage, a flock of sheep when Henry VI fantasies about being a 'homely swain', and the layering of the performance space - a brightly lit white corridor wraps around the main stage and a huge screen and a ceiling-high wall mirror bring additional depth to the main staging area.

Teenage Dick, The Public Theater

“Our Public Studio series concludes this spring with playwright Mike Lew’s fresh new adaption of one of The Bard’s most infamous history plays.

A brilliantly hilarious take on Shakespeare’s classic tale of power lust, TEENAGE DICK reimagines the most famous disabled character of all time as a 16-year-old outsider in the deepest winter of his discontent: his junior year at Roseland High.  Picked on because of his cerebral palsy (as well as his sometimes creepy Shakespearean way of speaking), Richard is determined to have his revenge and make his name by becoming president of the senior class. But as he manipulates and crushes the obstacles to his electoral success, Richard finds himself faced with a decision he never expected would be his to make: is it better to be loved or feared?” –blurb from the company website

Complete Works: Table Top Shakespeare

“A salt and pepper pot for the king and queen. A vase for the prince. A matchbox for the servant. A toilet roll tube for the Innkeeper. A water bottle for the messenger.

In Complete Works six performers create condensed versions of each and every Shakespeare play, comically and intimately retelling them, using a collection of everyday objects as stand-ins for the characters on the one-metre stage of an ordinary table top."
