Hamlet (햄릿), Sinsi Company

Director Jin-chaek Sohn cast famous actors and actresses in their 60s and 70s for all roles. These legendary old players showed the essence of classical acting. When the backdrop was opened after Hamlet's death, it revealed that there was a real auditorium behind the backdrop, and that the present auditorium was part of the stage. All of the actors and actresses slowly exited toward the auditorium carrying the ritual vessels positioned at the front edge of the stage. This play was not only about Hamlet, but also a kind of farewell ritual for the great old actors and actresses approaching their exit time.

Le Off (Festival d'Avignon)

“The Festival d’Avignon celebrated its 70th edition in 2016 and while there were no major Shakespearean productions on the main programme, they dominated the programme of the Festival Off d’Avignon (the fringe festival). The only playwright whose works were performed and adapted more was Molière. From puppet shows to experimental takes on the tragedies, Le Off offered a wide range of Shakespeare for all ages.”

Hamlet, Malachite Theatre

Hamlet, Malachite Theatre

As part of the official programme commemorating the 400th year anniversary of the deaths of Tang Xianzu and William Shakespeare, Performance Infinity helped the ‘The Malachites’ break new ground by taking responsibility for their first international tour of China.

Founded in 2013 ‘The Malachites’ are a site-specific theatre company who aim to reconnect Shakespeare and his plays to the areas in which he lived and worked, as well as bringing their own unique style to an international audience.

This year saw the Malachites take Hamlet, perhaps Shakespeare’s most revered play, to the Guangzhou Dramatic Arts Centre, China. Having previously played in venues ranging from historic gardens to Churches, this was an event not to be missed. In conjunction with Performance Infinity, ‘The Malachites’ production received critical acclaim, performing to a sold out Chinese audience.

Shakespeare Shorts: Hamlet and Romeo & Juliet, Shakespeare at Traquair

Shakespeare Shorts: Hamlet and Romeo & Juliet, Shakespeare at Traquair

"Hamlet's got the hump, Uncle Claudius is conniving, mother Gertrude's hit the bottle, and girlfriend Ophelia's away with the fairies. No wonder Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are confused. Mysteries, murders and magical music; Bathasar's bemused, Romeo's a wuss and the Friar's on the fiddle, but Juliet Capulet calls the shots in an ice cream war with the Montagues. Rip-roaring romance with a twist.” --description from Fringe Festival programme.

The Mousetrap: Anti-Hamlet

A work-in-progress by three young actors.

“Weaving personal critique with the canonical Western text, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare, three theatre-makers from Metro Manila eviscerate the rigours of classical theatre through irreverent intrusions of performance art, devised-theatre, DIY aesthetics, all within a self-imposed PHP 5,000.00 budget.” –description from the Karnabal Festival Facebook site

Hamlet#casting

"Hamlet#Casting is a combination of contradictions. It is a tale of the everyday, which can be banal and full of played-out scenarios. Musical hits which tell of unrequited love, Facebook conversations which do not bring happiness, dreams from TV serials. Against this background, Hamlet asks himself questions which sound like a repetitive chorus: am I good enough, valued, desired? Am I myself? Can one really live in a world in which one is always being watched?"

Ophelias Zimmer was a feminist alternative narrative that approached Hamlet from the point of view of the Dane's doomed lover, Ophelia. The action (or lack thereof) all took place in Ophelia's claustrophobic room where repetition enforced the play's reading of the character as a victim ensnared, silenced and aestheticised by Elsinore's patriarchy.

Hamlet, Daugavpils Theatre

The present staging of Hamlet is carried out in Daugavpils theatre which consists of two companies working simultaneously in Latvian and Russian. The performance is heavily based on Hamlet's inner struggle with his attempts and motivations, doubts, and confusion about the contemporary world. This focus challenges the subjectivity of all other characters in relation to Hamlet, as they almost have no independent existence. The staging is created by an international team, Polish, Russian and Latvian.

Song of the Beast (짐승가), Brecht Samuel Baguette

This is a performance where Hamlet is transported to a slaughterhouse in modern day South Korea. While it appears to be an ordinary slaughterhouse from the outside, it is in fact a perfectly controlled place, where powerful men butcher and execute their opponents. One day, the boss named Lee Sang-cheol is killed, and his son Lee Hae-in is trying to revenge his father's death. Painting a picture of extreme violence and wicked plans carried out by beast-like men, and one boy seeking an escape.
